Session 1
Textual Multilingualism in the Early Modern Spanish and Portuguese Worlds
Organized by Leni Ribeiro Leite
Deadline for Submissions:
July 31, 2025
This panel seeks to explore the interplay between Greek and Latin and vernacular languages in the vast and diverse territories governed by the Spanish and Portuguese crowns between the late fifteenth and early eighteenth centuries. In these multilingual colonial contexts, classical and vernacular tongues did not merely coexist but shaped and transformed each other across genres, disciplines, and geographies.
We invite proposals that examine bilingual or multilingual works from the Luso-Hispanic world, broadly understood, including the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Contributions may engage with literary, religious, legal, scientific, or administrative texts; consider translation, code-switching, or adaptation practices; or explore how linguistic dynamics reflected and produced power, identity, and cultural negotiation. Scholars from all disciplinary backgrounds are welcome.
Papers may be submitted in English, Spanish and Portugues. Please submit a 200-word abstract (with a 15-word maximum title) for a 20-minute paper following RSA submission guidelines, along with your full name, current affiliation, and a one-page CV. Submissions should be sent by July 31, 2025 to contact@hesperideslusohispano.org.
Additional CFPs for this conference will be announced shortly, please check back here in June or write to contact@hesperideslusohispano.org for updates!
